About the role
SPCA Parys is hiring a Trainee Inspector
Parys SPCA plays a critical role in promoting the welfare of animals in the community, and to do this effectively, it must be properly resourced. This includes having a qualified Inspector to perform key duties in accordance with NSPCA regulations. The Parys SPCA is seeking to appoint a Trainee Inspector who will commit to qualifying fully as an Inspector over a defined period. The successful candidate will be supported by Parys SPCA and the NSPCA through on-site mentorship, field experience, and formal inspectorate training, with the aim of ultimately fulfilling the Inspector role.
Responsibilities
What does an Inspector do?
Key responsibilities include:
Assisting with investigations of reports of animal cruelty and neglect
Supporting animal rescue and emergency response
Conducting routine inspections (farms, homes, businesses, townships)
Educating communities on responsible animal care
Assisting with evidence collection and statement preparation
Upholding the NSPCA Code of Conduct and organisational policies
Participating in outreach, vaccination, and dipping programmes
Maintaining accurate NSPCA-compliant records
Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
A passion for animal welfare
Experience working with animals (advantageous)
Grade 12 (Matric)
Willingness to attend and complete the NSPCA Inspector's Course
Valid, unendorsed South African Code B (EB) driver's licence
Ability to communicate effectively in English and Afrikaans (a third local language will be advantageous)
Good leadership, management, and communication skills
Be of sober habits
A clean National Police Clearance record (to be provided)
Good time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently as well as within a team
High ethical standards and discretion when handling sensitive information
Ability to follow instructions
Good computer literacy and administrative skills
Willingness to work overtime, standby, weekends, and public holidays
Affiliated to the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA)
Additional Requirements:
Must be a South African citizen
Assertive with strong written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to completing NSPCA inspector training
Preference will be given to applicants with:
Proficiency in Sesotho
Experience in animal welfare or community development
Strong interpersonal and conflict-handling skills
