VACANT POST:LTP (FITTER AND TURNER)
Job Purpose:
We are seeking a highly skilled, Trade-Tested Fitter & Turner with a deep specialization in conventional lathe machinery. The successful candidate will be responsible for manufacturing, modifying, and repairing mechanical components to exact engineering practices. You will support both our production line efficiency and attend breakdown maintenance operations.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
1. Precision Machining & Lathe Operations
Set up and operate conventional lathes, universal milling machines, and surface grinders.
Machine complex components involving external/internal turning, facing, boring, taper turning, knurling, and eccentric turning.
Cut precise internal and external screw threads (Metric, Imperial, Acme, and square profiles).
Select appropriate cutting tools, feed rates, and spindle speeds based on material types (e.g., mild steel, stainless steel, bronze, nylon).
2. Mechanical Fitting & Refurbishment
Diagnose mechanical faults, dismantle machinery, and reverse-engineer worn or broken components.
Refurbish worn shafts, bearing journals, and housings by building up material (welding) and re-machining back to OEM specifications.
Assemble, align, and test mechanical sub-assemblies, ensuring correct clearance, interference, and transition fits.
3. Technical Interpretation & Quality Control
Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and geometric tolerances.
Conduct strict self-inspection using precision measuring instruments, including outside/inside micrometers, vernier calipers, dial test indicators (DTIs), and bore gauges.
4. Safety & Workshop Maintenance
Adhere strictly to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act regulations and workshop safety policies.
Perform routine preventative maintenance on workshop machinery (lubrication, belt adjustments, fluid top-ups).
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workstation.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience Requirements:
Qualification: Valid Section 13 / Section 26D Fitter & Turner Trade Test Certificate (Recognised Red Seal).
Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of post-apprenticeship experience in a heavy engineering, manufacturing, or workshop environment.
Lathe Expertise: Proven track record of extensive, unsupervised conventional lathe operation is non-negotiable.
Education: N2 – N6 National Technical Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is highly advantageous.
Skills: Strong mathematical and analytical skills for calculating cutting angles, tolerances, and gear dimensions.
